Apple Halts Online Sales of Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 Amid Ongoing Patent Dispute

Apple Halts Online Sales of Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 Amid Ongoing Patent Dispute

Official Removal from Online Shop

As promised, Apple has officially removed the Watch Series 9 from its online shop, citing an ongoing patent dispute that forced the tech giant to halt sales of its flagship smartwatch.

Unavailability of Apple Watch Ultra 2

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 faces a similar fate, with online sales suspended. However, the entry-level Apple Watch SE remains available for purchase, likely due to its limited on-board health metrics.

Alternative Online Sources and Physical Stores

While the Series 9 can still be acquired through alternative online sources like Amazon, brick-and-mortar Apple Stores will continue to stock the product until Christmas Eve.

Impact of Patent Battle with Masimo

The heart of the dispute lies in an optical image sensor used to monitor the wearer’s heart rate, a technology Apple has employed since the launch of the Series 6 in 2020. The battle with health tech company Masimo has been ongoing, with accusations of talent poaching.

Apple’s Response and Legal Battle

In a statement, Apple confirmed its disagreement with the order and expressed commitment to fight the decisions. The company is currently navigating a Presidential Review Period concerning an order from the U.S. International Trade Commission on a technical intellectual property dispute.

Preemptive Measures and Sales Suspension

To comply with potential rulings, Apple has proactively halted sales of the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 from Apple.com starting December 21 and from Apple retail locations after December 24.

Continued Efforts to Return Products to Customers

Should the order stand, Apple pledges to take all necessary measures to return the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 to customers in the U.S. as soon as possible.

Holiday Season Impact

Stopping sales during the holiday season is particularly challenging for Apple. While sales were kept open until the last minute, some customers may find themselves receiving rainchecks instead of the desired watches this year.
